Fuel prices in the country have been increased by more than 50 percent. According to the media of the country, this is the first time that the prices of petrol and diesel have been increased in this way. After Sri Lanka, Bangladesh is now the neighbor of India where such protests are taking place. Angry protesters can be seen at fuel stations. Their demand is that the increase in prices should be withdrawn immediately. On Friday, Sheikh Hasina’s government had announced an increase in the prices of petrol and diesel.

After the new announcement made by the government, diesel has become costlier by 34 taka per liter, octane 46 taka per liter and petrol by 44 taka per liter. It has been said by many media outlets of the country that this is an increase of 51.7 percent. This is the first time since independence when petrol diesel has become so expensive in the country. Many such videos are coming on social media in which people are thronging the petrol pumps to fill the tanks.

People are standing in line overnight to get the tank full. Bangladesh’s economy is worth $416 billion. Till a few years ago, it was termed as the fastest growing economy of the world. But apart from energy, the country is facing difficulties due to costly food and drink. Imports have increased and the situation is such that the government has appealed for a loan from the International Monetary Fund.

Protesters have marched in the capital Dhaka and protested the government’s decision. Some of these people were associated with the student union which was protesting in front of the National Museum. The government is looting the property of the public and its attitude is adding to the suffering of the people. The Dhaka Tribune says that after the government’s decision, the operators increased the prices. Organizations like Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samiti (BJKS) have opposed this. The way oil prices are increasing in the international market, after that petrol and diesel will be expensive in Bangladesh as well, it was already expected. It was said on behalf of the Ministry of Energy that Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) has suffered a loss of 8 billion Taka till the month of July. Since then, there were speculations that the government may announce increased prices anytime.

The rate of inflation in the country has also increased for the ninth consecutive month and it remains at 6 percent. In July, the annual inflation rate had reached 7.48 percent. After this, it also became difficult for the poor and middle class people to bear the daily expenses.
