Sri Lanka-China Relation: Differences can deepen in Sri Lanka regarding China’s spy ship. India has protested against this spy ship by taking a strong stand. After India’s tough stand, Sri Lanka has appealed to China to postpone the visit of its spy ship Yuan Wang 5 to the Sri Lankan port of Hambantota. At the same time, Dragon looks angry with the matter of delaying the Hambantota tour regarding the spy ship.
Sri Lanka’s foreign ministry said in a note to the Chinese embassy on 5 August that the ministry wanted to request that the arrival of the ship Yuan Wang 5 in Hambantota be postponed until further consideration of the matter.
Sri Lanka bowed under the pressure of India!
According to media reports, the Chinese Ambassador posted in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, has met Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Sri Lankan news portals also reported that Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong had an in-camera meeting with Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe after Colombo demanded a postponement of the planned docking, but the President’s Office denied these reports.
Why did the dragon get tensed?
The previous government of the then Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had approved the docking of the Chinese vessel on July 12, hours before fleeing the country for the Maldives. At that time Sri Lanka had said that the Chinese vessel would dock for refueling. However, India opposed the approval given to the Chinese ship along with Sri Lanka, citing a threat to its national security. Maybe China doesn’t like this thing. It seems that even after Sri Lanka’s refusal, China is not ready to bow down.
Why did India object?
The Chinese Spy Ship Yuan Wang 5 is a spy, research and survey vessel, best known for its use in space and satellite tracking and intercontinental ballistic missile launches. According to media reports, India said that it carefully monitors any development affecting its security and economic interests. India believes that the ship’s tracking systems are trying to spy on Indian installations en route to the Sri Lankan port.
