The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday accused the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government of “intimidating, threatening” the director and producer of a controversial film. The BJP said that freedom of expression was being violated by “intimidating” the director and producer of a controversial film targeting Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee. Sharing a clip of the trailer of the film titled ‘The Diary of West Bengal’, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya said that “nothing appears to be factually incorrect in the trailer”.

The police issued a notice under Section 41A of the CrPC to director Sanoj Mishra for questioning at the Amherst Street police station in West Bengal on May 30. Sanoj Mishra is accused of trying to defame the state with this film. An FIR has been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), IT Act and Cinematography Act.

Amit Malviya said in a tweet, “After a failed attempt to ban The Kerala Story (the film is still not in theaters as the owners are being threatened with punitive action), Mamata Banerjee’s administration is now taking a call on the current situation in the state.” But the film based on true events is scaring the director and producer of The Diary of West Bengal. It is wrong to issue notice to the filmmakers as nothing seems to be factually incorrect in the trailer. This is the lived experience of many in Bengal. ” He wrote, “Mamata Banerjee must stop stifling freedom of speech and expression. She runs a downright shoddy government and it is only a matter of time before the people of Bengal bring her rule to dust.”

In the film’s trailer, which claims to be based on true events, the narrator states that Bengal has become a “second Kashmir” for “disorganized Hindus”. A character in the trailer claims that “Mamata’s love for Rohingya Muslims” is forcing Hindus to leave their homes. The trailer also alleges that appeasement politics has led to a ban on Hindu festivals in the state. Responding to the allegations of trying to defame the state, Director Mishra said, ‘My intention is not to tarnish the image of the state. We have shown only those facts in the film which are well researched.

Sanoj Mishra said that the shooting of the film is yet to be completed and they may submit it to the Central Board of Film Certification next month. The film is written and produced by Jitendra Narayan Singh Tyagi (formerly Waseem Rizvi), former chairman of the Shia Waqf Board in Uttar Pradesh. Wasim Rizvi converted to Hinduism in December 2021 and now his name is Narayan Singh Tyagi.
