Ever since Rahul Dravid has taken over the command of Team India, India has had to show less victory, more loss. Especially on foreign soil, the Indian team has suffered continuous defeats. India’s results abroad under Dravid’s coaching show that he has not been able to prove himself in his role so far.
Team India flop abroad under Dravid’s coaching
Rahul Dravid became the head coach of Team India on 17 November 2021. Since then, the Indian team has played eight Test matches, out of which it has won four, lost three and drew one. To understand Dravid’s role in a better way, let us divide these figures into series.
Lost Test series 1-2 in South Africa
Rahul Dravid, who was the wall of Team India, had his first overseas tour as head coach in South Africa. India won the first Test match by 113 runs at Centurion on 26 December 2021. It was the first win for an Asian team in Centurion. The Proteas had lost a match at this ground after seven years. Momentum was with the Indian team but in the next two matches, all the players were battered. India lost the three-Test series 1-2. This was a big failure of Rahul Dravid’s coaching.
0-3 India clean sweep in South Africa
Along with the players, the team management’s decisions were equally responsible for the defeat in the Test series, which was in the hands of the head coach. Players like Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane were retained in the team despite their poor performances. Although Dravid had a chance to make a comeback in the ODI series, India had to be more embarrassed here. The African team wiped out India 3-0. In the last few years under the coaching of Ravi Shastri, this failure was disturbing for the Indian team, which won on foreign soil, but no one asked the question to the coach.
Had to struggle on Indian soil too
In the five T20 series against South Africa held in June 2022 on their soil, Team India had to struggle a lot to save the honor. India lost the first two matches. However, they won the last two matches and the series was tied at 2-2. The decider of the series could not be played due to rain.
Poor coaching in Birmingham Test against England
Before the start of the rescheduled Test of the five-Test series, India were ahead 2–1. Team India reached a strong position in this series in 2021 under Shastri’s coaching. But Dravid ruined his earnings. The Indian team got a big lead of 132 runs in the first innings. The enthusiasm of this edge should have been seen in the strategy of the players and the team, but both the coach and the players looked sluggish. Be it the field placement or the level of fielding, the Indian team remained on the back foot. Coach Dravid was not seen giving a signal to the team on any occasion. Hanuma Vihari dropped a crucial catch from Jonny Bairstow in the slips but he did not consider it necessary to give any signal to change field to Jasprit Bumrah, captain in the first match. As a result, India lost their chance to register a historic win in England, the series ended in a 2-2 draw.
