Islamabad : Amid strained Indo-Pak relations, India will send an invitation to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting to be held in May this year. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto and Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang were on Wednesday handed over invitations for the SCO summit to be held in Goa. These invitations have been sent as per the prescribed procedure but it is not confirmed whether Bilawal Bhutto and Qin Gang will attend the function or not.

If Pakistan’s Prime Minister or Foreign Minister decides to attend the meeting in person, it would be the first such visit from Islamabad to India since 2011. Earlier, Pakistan’s then Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar had visited India in 2011. Relations between India and Pakistan were strained after the Balakot airstrike that followed the Pulwama terror attack in February 2019.

Pakistan Financial Crisis: From cigarette to cola… big blow from IMF, now Shahbaz will explode 300 billion ‘tax bomb’ on Pakistani people

India’s invitation to Pakistan is very special

In August 2019, the Government of India abolished Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, after which the trade between the two countries stopped completely. India’s invitation to Pakistan assumes significance considering the all-time low in India-Pakistan bilateral relations. India is currently the chair of the SCO of eight countries. The SCO Foreign Ministers’ meeting is expected to be held in Goa later this year.

Invitation sent to Russia and China as well

The SCO also includes China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. An invitation has been sent by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar through the Indian High Commission in Islamabad to his Pakistani counterpart Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to visit Goa in the first week of May for the meeting. Invitations have also been sent to the Foreign Ministers of China and Russia along with other Central Asian countries.
