Recalling her initial days in the TV industry, Smriti revealed that producer Shobha didn’t allow anyone to eat or drink tea on the sets as she feared the furniture would get damaged. “You don’t even look like a star, you look like a technician with that kind of lifestyle. I used to get 1800, per day. We were barely married when Zubin and I got married 30,000. I remember my make-up man was embarrassed and he used to say, ‘Gadi to lelo mujhe sharam aati hai main gadi pe aata hun aur Tulsi bhabhi auto mein aa rahi hai. Sister-in-law travels in an auto)’, Smriti said in The Slow Interview with Nilesh Mishra.
Smriti also recalled how she used to get annoyed seeing that actors were allowed to eat on the sets while technicians and crew members were not. She remembered that he had not taken a break even after 12-15 hours and was giving her tea. However, he refused to take it himself as he was not allowed to have tea on the sets.
“So then I had a setting with the spot man, I would ask for 60 teas to be ready and I would go out with the technicians so that they all could have their teas as well. I used to travel just like the technicians, so I knew what they were going through,” said Smriti. He added that it was only after Shobha Kapoor saw him having tea outside that the actor managed to get Shobha to allow everyone (including technicians and other crew members) to have tea on the sets.
