New Delhi . Snapchat on Tuesday launched a new in-app tool that will allow parents to see who their kids are chatting with. Kids will also be able to see how their parents see them through Snapchat’s ‘Family Center’ feature, which has been rolled out in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, among other countries soon.
Parents and guardians will be able to view children’s friend lists, which accounts they have been communicating with within the past week, and report suspicious accounts directly to Snapchat.
The company said in a statement, “The Family Center is designed to reflect how parents engage with their teens in the real world, where parents generally know who their teens are friends with and they Who are you hanging out with?”
Both the parent and child must accept the invitation to the Family Center before the monitoring tool can take effect.
Once the invitation is accepted, the parent can view the child’s list of friends and the list of accounts they have interacted with in the last seven days.
Unlike Instagram’s ‘Family Center’, Snapchat’s tool won’t allow parents to set a time limit for kids to use the app or how long they’ve been active on the platform.
However, Snapchat will add similar features in the near future with more parental control over the content.
Katherine Carter, APAC general manager of Snap, said, “Our Family Center feature will help parents find out more about who their teens are friends with on Snapchat, fostering positive conversations about online safety within families. while respecting the privacy and autonomy of adolescents.”
“Our goal was to create a set of tools designed to reflect the dynamics of real-world relationships and foster collaboration and trust between parents and teens,” Snape said.
