Ukraine is bearing the brunt of an attempt to join NATO in the form of a Russian attack on itself. Russia had also asked its other neighboring countries to keep a distance from NATO. But Finland and Sweden did not listen to Russia. Amidst Russian threats, he also applied for NATO membership, which also got the approval of the US Congress. Earlier, Turkey was blocking Sweden’s attempt to join NATO, but it agreed upon persuading the US. In such a situation, the approval of the US Congress was necessary for the membership of these two countries. Which has happened now. In such a situation, only the formality of these two joining NATO remains. Although many issues are yet to be worked out regarding expenditure, military deployment and its share, but the most important milestone in all of them has been crossed by both these countries.

Russia’s threat to Scandinavian countries joining NATO?

Sweden, Finland and Norway. All these three countries are considered Scandinavian countries. Norway was one of the founding members of this important military alliance NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). Finland and Sweden had so far refrained from making themselves part of any military alliance. But after the Russian attack on Ukraine, referendums were held in both countries, in which the public approved both countries to join NATO with an overwhelming majority. After which announcements were made in this regard in the parliaments of both the countries. Now after getting the approval of the US Congress, this process will be very fast. The borders of all these three Scandinavian countries meet with Russia and they have contact with some part of Russia. The largest border is between Finland and Russia. In such a situation, Russia feels threatened by the deployment of NATO forces and weapons in Finland. This is the reason why he keeps taking every step to prevent neighboring countries from joining NATO, including threats.

Bill passed by 95 votes against one

Voting was done on this issue in the US Congress. In this case only one Congress member voted against, while 95 votes in support. According to the information, US President Joe Biden wanted both the countries to be included in NATO as soon as possible, for this he sent this bill for the approval of Congress. This bill was sent to Congress in July itself, which required a two-thirds majority to pass. But everyone’s vote went in its favor except one.
