Birmingham: India’s 20-year-old weightlifter Achinta Shuli achieved a new sporting record total of 313kg by winning the gold medal in men’s 73kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2022 at NEC Hall No.1 in Birmingham.

He lifted 143kg in snatch and 170kg in clean and jerk to overtake Malaysia’s Eri Hidayat Muhammad. He won the silver medal with a total of 303kg, while Canada’s S. Darsigny won the bronze medal with a total of 298 kg.

Shuli’s gold is India’s third medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games here and sixth overall in weightlifting.

Sheuli, a 20-year-old former tailor from West Bengal’s Howrah district, was the favorite in 73kg and took the lead in the snatch category by lifting 143kg.

She started with 165kg in her first attempt in the clean and jerk, which put her 1kg ahead of the Malaysian.

The Indian youngster failed to lift 170kg in his second attempt and lifted a total of 313kg in his third attempt, a Commonwealth Games record.

Muhammad of Malaysia made a desperate, but futile attempt to lift 175kg to overthrow the Indian, but failed in two attempts, earning Shuli the gold medal.
